Disqualification Rules
Based on age group, the rules are either more relaxed or stricter, but these are the general reasons a person may be disqualified especially in city meet for each stroke.
Butterfly
-Legs must stay close together and move together
-Swimmer must touch the wall EVERY TIME with two hands at the same time
-Flip turns are not permitted on butterfly
Backstroke
-The swimmer may not turn over and swim on their stomach
-Flutter kick must be used
-One hand touches are allowed
-On a flip turn for a race more than a 25, the swimmer is allowed ONE STROKE after they turn over on their stomach for the flip. If they turn early, they should just kick to the wall until they can flip.
Breaststroke
-A proper breaststroke kick must be used. Scissor kicks are not allowed. If you are unsure if you are using this improper technique, please ask your coach.
-Swimmer must touch the wall with two hands EVERY TIME and both hands must touch at the same time
-Flip turns are not permitted on breaststroke
Freestyle
Basically, as long as you are swimming freestyle you are ok.
Individual Medley
-When turning between two strokes (like backstroke to breaststroke) a flip turn is not permitted
-On a 100 IM, the swimmer should not do any flip turns
-On a 200 IM, the swimmer can do a flip turn only when turning from backstroke to backstroke or from freestyle to freestyle
